Self-stimulating soothers in social situations: Part One: Introduction and Stim Kit
This is a series for neurodivergents and people on the autism spectrum as well as anyone with social anxiety, agoraphobia, or other socially-induced anxieties. I would like to note that I, personally, suffer from mild agoraphobia, strong social anxiety, and am neurodivergent (or as Howie put it, ‘near-autie’). These are things that I have utilized on social situations based on my own personality, specifically my proclivity to ritualistic behavior, low frustration threshold, overstimulation, hypersensitivity, and shutdowns/meltdowns.
…huh. I do all this stuff without even realizing that it was a Thing. (Why are all of my neurodivergent tendencies like that?) Anyway, yeah, I never go anywhere without a big-ass Slytherin messenger bag that has all sorts of stuff (books, iPod, headphones, notebooks, sketchbooks, pencils, etc) even though I rarely get a chance or have the need for them. It’s a “better have it and not need it” sort of thing. And the bag itself is kind of a comfort object.
reblogging for @jtr, curious about your thoughts on these coping mechanisms. These seem appropriate for anxiety disorders and ptsd as well as neurodivergents.
this shit is USEFUL. i definitely need to start putting together a kit to give me things to use to redirect my anxiety from pulling off parts of me.
thanks @bird for the tip, thanks @OP for the post!
